U.S.-based car dealers have been buying up Canadian used cars and bringing them across the border to increase inventory due to the Global Chip Shortage. In the first five months of 2021, 151,952 vehicles were imported into the U.S. from Canada. However, Canadian dealers face the same problems U.S.-based dealers face, including depleted inventory amid a 38% increase in used vehicles as of May. J.D. Power told Automotive News Canada, “Canadian dealers are complaining that they’re not able to get the popular vehicles. The better units are going to the U.S., and the higher-mileage-to-average-condition units are staying in Canada.”
